Yobs could be named and shamed

Welshpool’s town centre yobs could find their images splashed across the local media in a bid to stamp out a troublesome minority.

The Town Council is asking residents what role the extended and newly refurbished CCTV system should take, and the ‘name and shame’ proposal features in the questionnaire.

It was discussed at full council last week and its latest newsletter includes a page entitled ‘CCTV in Welshpool’.

In it, it asks if residents would support a plan to ‘gain pictures and evidence of antisocial behaviour with a view to publishing pictures in the media once a month of those who commit such offences’.

Town Clerk, Robert Robinson, said: “The CCTV is a subject upon which we have a working group that is considering 24 hour monitoring, local monitoring for periods which will change from week to week and the installation of more cameras where needed.  One suggestion has been that we publish pictures of offenders in the papers.  However, all this needs to be approved by Council as a complete package in the New Year.”

Earlier this summer, councillors agreed to fund a new CCTV system for the troubled Maesydre area following a spate of vandalism.
