Microsoft scam targets Welshpool

14/11/2011 @ 04:07

Just four days after mywelshpool joined forces with the police to fight scams targeting local residents, fraudsters are trying again with a sophisticated telephone ‘Microsoft’ scam.

We have been told that locals are being conned into visiting a web site and unwittingly giving permission to allow the bogus caller control of their computer. The fraudster can then remotely access all confidential data saved including banking information.

“If ever you’re in doubt about a telephone cold call ask for the person’s name, job title, and department then find a genuine number for the company they claim to work for and call them back,” said Inspector Diane Davies. “If they are who they say they are they will be happy to comply with your request.

“If you’re still in doubt for any reason then don’t do business with them, don’t give out any private details and report the call immediately to the company and/or the police via 101.”
