Zebra Crossing 'may not be the solution'

16/12/2011 @ 04:27

A new zebra crossing will be installed outside the town hall to guide pedestrians safely across the one-way system, but there are rumblings that it may not be the most suitable solution.

Transport Secretary Carl Sargent confirmed the crossing in his transport plan for Wales which was released this past week.

But while pedestrians who have raised concerns that the fast flowing one-way two-lane traffic was making crossings dangerous will welcome the announcement, planners are not so sure.

Town Clerk Robert Robinson said: “The Town Council requested a crossing but we would have preferred a different type. We have a concern that on busy days when a number of people are crossing that cars could back up to the lights and slow traffic down which is what no-one wants.”

The lights on the cross operate on a sensor system which enables busier routes in to flow for longer, but a flaw was exposed earlier this year when cars stopping for fast food on Severn Street were caused a glitch.

But planners say the new crossing will be monitored after it is installed in the New Year.
