Town Centre Booze Free Zone for 2012

28/12/2011 @ 12:09

The New Year could see the introduction of a Town Centre booze ban, after the town council said its proposals had received the backing from police.

The recent town survey demonstrated overwhelming support from residents for a ban on alcohol being drunk in public areas, and the town council said it would now push ahead with an application to Powys County Council.

“The last survey showed Welshpool is massively in favour of the ban and we have the backing of the police,” said Town Clerk Robert Robinson. “We will ask residents in the New Year to list the trouble spots and incidents so we can make a strong case but we are all for a ban.”

Mr Robinson said that an initial booze free zone will be agreed with police with the main question being ‘where do you draw the boundary line?’

“We don’t want to be in a position where we simply move people from one area drinking to another just up the road,” he said. “There will be plenty of consultation before a final application is made to Powys in the New Year.”

It is thought that St Mary’s Church Yard as well as areas of the canal could be incorporated into a booze free zone. The application will be made to Powys County Council to consider.
