Recycle unwanted/broken electrical goods plea

30/12/2011 @ 03:54

Local residents are being urged to recycle broken or donate unwanted electrical items after it was revealed that 70% end up in a landfill site.

With most households taking possession of new appliances this week, the message is to not be so hasty in throwing the old versions away and to sell unwanted gifts on web sites like eBay or to offer them through Freegle or Freecycle.

The campaign is strongly supported by Powys County Council.
“As a council we are doing everything we can to help avoid the large costs incurred by sending refuse to landfill sites, but electrical items can also contain toxic chemicals that damage the environment and human health.” said Councillor Ken Harris, Cabinet Member for Waste and Recycling.

“Reusing or recycling electrical equipment is a much more efficient way of overcoming these challenges and helping create a greener, healthier Powys for our residents.”
