Wow! That was some storm....

Welshpool slept through the biggest storm of the winter so far, and has been clearing up the damage left behind by 80mph winds and torrential rain.

Following a relatively mild start to the New Year, a heavy storm blew in from the south west around midnight and left a trail of closed roads, fallen trees and knocked over fences in its wake.

This picture shows a tree that came down opposite the Spar Car Park overnight and other reader pictures have been appearing on Facebook as the area was shaken by the storm’s ferocity.

Local taxi firm Wrights was the first to issue its unofficial yet highly reliable weather warning during the early hours when owner Steve Wright shared his experiences of the roads first hand on his Facebook page.

And residents are being warned that while today should see some respite, more rain could fall over the coming days putting more pressure on areas close to the swollen River Severn.
