CAP reform tops local farmers agenda

Farmers in Montgomeryshire have the chance to channel their views on Common Agricultural Policy reform directly via NFU Cymru President Ed Bailey.

Mr Bailey will attend the next NFU Montgomeryshire County meeting in Newtown to hear members’ opinions regarding Welsh Government’s consultation on proposals for CAP reform published by the European Commission in October 2011. The consultation had also set out some initial conclusions reached by Welsh Government and farmers were asked to comment.

Deputy Minister for Agriculture Alun Davies had made it clear that the consultation would not be a one-off exercise but part of an on-going process to stimulate and sustain dialogue for the coming few months.

Montgomeryshire County branch Chairman Edward Chapman said: “I understand that much of the operational detail will not be known until the European Commission publishes draft implementation regulations, which NFU Cymru believes to be some months away from publication.

“As CAP reform is the most important legislation that will affect the way we farm here in Wales for many years to come, it is important that members come to this meeting to help our President get the message across to Welsh Government. There are outstanding CAP issues that still need to be resolved,” Mr Chapman said.

The NFU Cymru Montgomeryshire County meeting will be held at the Elephant and Castle Hotel on February 28 from 7.30pm.
