Why are we waiting?

01/03/2012 @ 05:24

One of the most anticipated announcements in Montgomeryshire’s history “could” be made in March, but there is a chance we may all have to wait longer.

Energy giants are planning a pylon corridor and a 20-acre substation to relay power from windfarms earmarked for the west of the shire to England’s National Grid connection.

Two fiercely opposed corridors have been proposed, with a substation at either Abermule or Cefn Coch, and initially ScottishPower and National Grid said the preferred route would be revealed in February after extensive public consultation. But that was put back a month at Christmas and could possibly take longer.

A senior ScottishPower insider told us: “We are at the final stages of considering all of the feedback and data from the consultation period. It is important that all of the information we have received can be fully examined and considered as part of our decision making process. We are also working closely with National Grid throughout this process.

“As soon as this process has been completed, and a decision has been made, we will look to announce the details and follow this up with further community meetings. Although we do not have an exact date at this stage, we will look to update the local communities as soon as we possibly can.”

Meanwhile, a meeting of Powys County Council’s Cabinet to debate two wind farm applications will be screened live on the Internet.

The Cabinet will meet on March 13 to discuss the county council’s response to wind farm applications for Carnedd Wen, Llanbrynmair and Llanbadarn Fynnydd. The two applications will be considered by the Department of Energy and Climate Change because of their size with the county council asked to comment.

Following the live broadcast viewers will be invited to fill in a short survey to help the county council understand any issues that viewers experience.
