A Welshpool High School student has won through as a finalist in a prestigious writing competition organised by one of the most elite journalism institutions in the world.

Huw Harris (pictured), from Leighton, is one of six students recognised by the Parliamentary Press Gallery, the organisation for Parliamentary and political journalists at Westminster, and will meet Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg today (Tuesday) at No. 10 Downing Street where the winner will be announced.

Huw entered the Write Now national competition through the school and his personal campaign statement explaining why the electorate should choose him as Welshpool Mayor stood him out from thousands of entries from across Britain.

The competition is endorsed from the highest levels with Prime Minister David Cameron telling Huw: “The fact that this competition has stimulated such interest is a sign of how engaged many young people want to be with political discussion and decision-making if given the chance. It’s a great way to encourage a new generation to learn more about Parliament and the political process, and I would like to wish you even greater success in the years to come.”

As a reward, Huw will receive a tour of Westminister today before attending a Downing Street meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Rt. Hon. Nick Clegg MP. He then takes lunch in the Press Gallery and visit its facilities including the television studios.
