Local farmers step up milk protests

16/07/2012 @ 01:25

Local farmers have launched a campaign to reverse the proposed cuts in prices that the ‘big three’ milk providers are willing to pay them for their milk.

A small but vocal group took their protest to the door of Morrisons in Welshpool this morning for a symbolic launch in front of the local media following a meeting with MP Glyn Davies at the Livestock Market.

The gathering may have been small but the message was big that the third cut in prices this year will place a serious strain on one of Montgomeryshire’s biggest industries.

Chanting “fair price for milk”, the protesters say they refuse to be bullied by Robert Wiseman Dairies, owned by Müller Dairies, Arla Foods UK, the UK subsidiary of Arla Foods Amba, as well as Dairy Crest, who have announced cuts to their milk prices paid to farmers of 1.7ppl, 2.0ppl and 1.65ppl respectively. They, in turn, blame the pressure placed by supermarkets for cheaper milk on the shelf.

Last Wednesday, thousands of dairy farmers from across the UK converged on London to make their protests known to the heart of Government.
