Stuarts and Olympics at Castle

20/07/2012 @ 08:18

Powis Castle and Garden holds the first of this summer’s popular Stuart Fun Days on Saturday, with an Olympic flavour arriving on Monday.

Visitors are invited to join castle staff and travel back to a time of lace collars and musketfire as the civil war raged across the land. Period musicians will play as Stuart characters create living history in the grounds. Stuart dance classes will help everyone feel like a true lady or gentleman while the old kitchens will house a fine Stuart cook and lacemakers will show off their skills elsewhere in the grounds.

There will be quill writing along with Punch and Judy crafts for children. The Stuart trail to crack the code and save the king will also be available.

The true Stuart treasures lie in the castle itself. The State Bedroom has the only surviving example of a 1660s balustrade while the baroque ceiling paintings mirror those of the Doges Palace in Venice. It also houses two Thomas Tompian clocks, famed for an accuracy unsurpassed until the invention of the digital clock.

The day is followed on Monday when the Kids go Sport Day is held from 12-3pm. An Olympic torch will be present for photo opportunities on the Great Lawn. Kids will be read stories around the labyrinth on the Great Lawn and then crafts and sporting fun begins. There are races for the grown-ups too! £2 per child.
