Time capsule buried at ‘Smithy’

20/07/2012 @ 09:19

Youngsters from three Welshpool infant schools sent a message to the future by burying a time capsule in the grounds of the new Smithfield Bell pub restaurant.

Pupils from Oldford Nursery & Infant School, Ardwyn Nursery and Infant School, and Gungrog Infant School joined forces to attend the time capsule event.

Memorabilia from the different schools such as photographs, school books, school sweaters, and letters from the students were all part of the items included in the capsule. The Mayor of Welshpool, Counicillor John Meredith, was on hand to join the students who were all aged six.

Yvonne Naylor, headteacher at Oldford and Acting Head at Ardwyn, said: “It was great to be involved in such a fabulous event. All the children showed a real passion for the time capsule and everyone was excited about it. We certainly believe that it will make interesting viewing when dug up in fifty years time!”

A plaque was also unveiled on the day at The Smithfield Bell showing the date and the details of when the capsule was buried.

Mark and Sarah Watson, managers of the Marston’s Inns and Taverns pub (pictured with the mayor and children), added: “The time capsule is not only a fascinating project for youngsters to take part in, but it’s also quite symbolic for us too as we haven’t been opened that long. We’re still at the beginning of something new with The Smithfield Bell, which will be around for generations of families to enjoy.”
