Full Speed ahead for Welshpool company

Speed, the Welshpool based distribution company is opening a new warehouse as it continues to grow following an April management buy-out and is promising more jobs

The 30,000sq ft warehouse in the former Floform building on Henfaes Lane will help accommodate additional volumes it has gained since the April buy-out.

Five HGVs and five truck drivers have come on board to cope with the expansion and the company is predicting a further five jobs in the very near future.

The Welshpool business, formerly called Speed Distribution, has invested £40,000 to move to the Floform building on a seven-year lease. It will be operational from next month and will run alongside the firm's existing Severn Road facility.

MD Phil Edwards, who jointly purchased the company with partner Nigel Jones in April said: "You have to sell your way out of a recession, and we have been doing just that by going out there and forming new strategic partnerships and really publicising our name.

“We feel there will be more big corporate firms looking to subcontract to us. WE have already created five new jobs and I am confident we will soon be recruiting at least another five."

The company recently signed a 12-month deal with Norbert Dentressangle (ND) to trunk goods in Llandrindod Wells and Shrewsbury to and from ND's Birmingham hub.

"We are in a number of negotiations to form more partnerships with large hauliers, because we have the resources to operate for them in a cost-effective way," Mr Edwards added.

In addition to being a Palletways member, Speed has also agreed to work for United Pallet Network. Edwards explains: "Because this is such a remote patch, and there is not a massive amount of volume, it was agreed we could work for both networks."

The company is also stepping in to help Palletforce distribute in the area after its member HWR Transport went into liquidation in June. It will continue to do so until the end of October. .
