A-lister link to local property

First it was Sloane Square, then it was Alderley Edge but could Montgomeryshire be bracing itself to become the new playground of the rich and the famous?

Rumours have been filling our mywelshpool and mynewtown mail boxes over the past month of celebrities casting an eye over upscale local properties with Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Alan Sugar two names mentioned more than once.

And when we checked them out with a credible local property insider, we were blown away by the response.

“You would be surprised by the people who are now looking at the Welshpool and Newtown areas to buy property!” he told us on condition of anonymity to protect his clients.

“I can tell you that I have only this week been speaking to another big name celebrity looking to move to the area. All I will say is think reality TV shows like I'm a Celeb and
Celeb Big Brother!”

Rumours have included Sir Alex sniffing around Glansevern Hall, which recently held an incredibly successful Welsh Food Festival, and Sir Alan spending time and resources looking at the area. Michael Owen’s name has also popped up and not because a local club was looking to sign him on deadline day! He is said to be looking for stable space.

Mid Wales Airport means private jets can link multi-millionaire businessmen with Western Europe while footballers, many of whom know the area already through pheasant shooting, use helicopters as their vehicle of choice these days meaning Manchester is 30 minutes away and London just an hour.

“They can get much more bang for their buck in Montgomeryshire,” said our property insider. “The market in Cheshire is inflated now so older footballers can view this area as a more sound longer term investment.”

Ironically, it seems to be the unwanted news of wind farms which has brought rare national attention to the area. According to protesters, the scheduled construction of a power station at Cefn Coch and pylons through the valleys will hit house prices, but it has alerted celeb house hunters.

“It starts with one, and once the word spreads you receive interest from more. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see quite a few A-listers setting up home in the area,” said our source. “It seems the secret is out about Montgomeryshire so it will be interesting to see how it all plays out in the coming year or two.”

TV weathergirl Sian Lloyd lives between Welshpool and Newtown with her husband Jonathan Ashman, but it may not be long before we see some more familiar faces on the local high streets.
