Free parking fillip for Xmas

04/10/2012 @ 03:54

The new leader of Powys County Council has announced that he and fellow senior Cabinet Members have refused a substantial pay rise in a bid to support local town centres with Christmas trade.

Cllr David Jones wrote in Guilsfield’s Spotlight newsletter that the money saved from skipping the pay rises – approximately £47,000 – would be used towards free parking from December 8-24.

And this week Powys Council’s cabinet rubber stamped the proposal for free parking at all council pay and display car parks from 10am every day.

The decision has been welcomed by Montgomeryshire Assembly Member Russell George who said: “I am very pleased with this decision which can only support local businesses in our town centres in the run up to Christmas.

“Fair play to the cabinet members. It is a great gesture.”
