Football tackles troubled youth

Football has been used as an innovative way to engage local youths who are at risk of offending or getting involved in anti-social behavior.

The North Powys Challenge Cup 2010 included youths from the Welshpool, Llanfair and Llanfyllin areas, and took place at Newtown Leisure Centre. It was organised by Powys Youth Service.
In addition to enabling the Youth Service and Police to engage with young people, the event gave them the opportunity to take part in a team sport activity throughout the summer holiday.
The seven-a-side tournament involved youths aged 13-16 and included the expert help from two qualified football coaches. 
PCSO Hannah Edwards said: “It was a great tournament and along with our colleagues in the Youth Offending Service, this match highlights our commitment to working with our partners and to develop positive links and engage with the youths in our local community.”
Llanfair Caereinion Tigers eventually won the eight-team tournament.
