Powys on Measles alert

06/03/2013 @ 10:27

Powys teaching Health Board is warning the county that it is on red alert for a possible Measles outbreak, after 190 children were affected by the potentially fatal disease in South Wales.

The Board says all children who have not been fully vaccinated with MMR should contact their GP for advice and arrange a vaccination as soon as possible.

It comes after it wreaked havoc in Swansea and with the disease being highly contagious, there is now a risk to children across Powys.

“Measles is highly contagious and there are still children in Powys at risk of catching it because they’ve not been immunised,” said a Board spokesperson.

“Those whose vaccination record is unclear, or who have just received one dose of MMR, should also ensure that they contact their GP.”

The Board said that the Measles outbreak provides a stark reminder of the importance of having 10 childhood vaccinations by age five.

They advise any concerned parents to contact their GP.
