Welshpool Police could face some interesting questions at tonight’s (Tuesday) public meeting after an eagle-eyed MyWelshpool reader snapped one of their patrol cars parked in a supermarket disabled bay!

The reader, using the ‘contact us’ function on our new app, snapped the car last night at Morrison’s and said it was parked there for “at least 10 minutes” despite the car park being “three-quarters empty” and there being “spaces available right opposite the disabled bays”.

The Community Police Team is due to meet the public tonight at an open meeting in the Corn Exchange to discuss local policing issues from 7pm. All are welcome to attend.

Dyfed-Powys police has not responded to our request for an explanation but a police insider tells us unofficially that the officer was responding to an emergency call.

It’s not the first time this sort of controversy has surfaced. Officers in Hampshire got in hot water with their boss last month after being snapped in a disabled bay outside MacDonalds.

On that occasion, the citizen journalist claimed they were picking up a takeaway but the force responded: “We’d like to reassure you though that on this occasion the officer in question was responding to an emergency – and was not in a hurry for a McFlurry!”

That incident sparked a social media frenzy with readers both criticising and supporting the officers.

Have you downloaded our app yet? Never before has it been so easy for you to become our eyes and ears on the street as this story proves. With one or two clicks you can take a picture through the ‘contact us’ option and join our growing army of ‘citizen journalists’. If you see something that could be of interest, snap it and send!
