Solicitors’ dairy fight backing

Welshpool firm Harrisons Solicitors LLP has shown its support for a campaign to block a ‘super dairy’ being built on the edge of Leighton.

The firm agreed to represent CALFe (The Campaign against Lower Leighton Farm expansion) at the Public Inquiry held in Welshpool recently and is confident the final decision will fall in the campaign’s favour.

Although CALFe had represented themselves at the original planning application before Powys County Council, Harrisons stepped forward to help at the Public Enquiry with over two thirds of its professional time carried out on a Pro-Bono basis.

“As a Lawyer who has worked locally for over 25 years I saw on behalf of Harrisons Solicitors LLP an opportunity for my firm to contribute to the local community and specifically Leighton and without reservation agreed to undertake the majority of the work on a Pro-Bono basis,” said Mr Huw Wyn Williams LLP.

“It was a pleasure representing CALFe in such an important Inquiry. The witnesses that were called on behalf of CALFe gave their evidence well and I am sure left the Inspector in no doubt as to the impact that the development would have on the village, school, health, noise and the other amenities which contribute to village life, but which would undoubtedly be adversely affected by the development.

“I hope on behalf of my clients that, after all their hard work and effort, the decision, once made, is a favourable one.”

The campaigners are against plans to expand the current dairy farm into a substantially larger facility which applicant, Fraser Jones, says is the only way that the struggling industry can survive.
