Car park to close Monday

The car park located on the old tennis courts by Maesydre School will close on Monday for well needed resurfacing work to be carried out.

The well used car park became one of the most disputed patches of land in Welshpool last year, but was saved much to the relief of the school and sports clubs.

Due to initial substandard work after being converted to the car park, it decayed badly and a wrangle of who was responsible resulted in its temporary closure.

But Welshpool Town Council and Powys County Council came to an agreement which will see the car park completely revamped at a cost of £10,000, and will remain open for the next five years at least.

“The car park is being closed due to resurfacing from 4pm Monday and will re-open on Thursday, August 1,” said a town council spokesperson. “All cars that are usually there should be moved to allow the work to proceed.”

Any cars present when the workers move in will be towed away.

It is believed that Powys will foot the bill while Welshpool will manage the area. Its wooden fence has been repeatedly vandalised too over the past year, but CCTV has been installed in the area to catch any future offenders.
