Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on Monday.
OTMS (39)
An entry of Over thirty month cattle sold to average 130.46ppkg for the older cows, 159ppkg for the bulls, Under 48 month old heifers sold to 146ppkg and under 48 month old steers to average 129ppkg. A Welsh Black cow weighing 709kg from WRP Jones, Ysguboriau achieved the top market price of £1079.59; therefore Mr Jones receives the Briarwood Products Limited Prize of £25 for the highest price older cow sold on the day. A Charolais bull under 72 months weighed 1120kg made £1780.80 from Roberts & Jones, Parc. Under 48 month British Blue heifer weighing 744kg made a total of £1116 from SJ Smith, Penybryn.
FAT CATTLE (10)
7 top quality heifers at an average price of 251.8ppkg and topped at 267ppkg with 3 other heifers averaging 188ppkg. Medium weights heifers two at top 247ppkg and an average of 239ppkg. CULL EWE (2952)
There was an increase in numbers this week as well as a slight increase in trade seeing an average of £52.58 for the ewes and £64.45 for the rams. Cull ewes topped the sale this week with a price of £122 from RG Jenkins & Co, Cilhaul; others reached £105 from CL & C Watkins, Bank Farm. Rams achieved a price of £91 from JG & MWA Clayton, Great Brimmon. Weekly sale of cull sheep to follow immediately after the sale of prime lambs at approx 12 noon.
STORE EWES AND STORE LAMBS.
Store Lambs: The first entry of 55 Store lambs. Mixed & Clean lambs achieved a top price of £55 from PD Shepard & Son. Tup lambs achieving a top price of £59.50 from D Jones, Tynyreithin. Mixed & Tup lambs achieved top price of £50 from W Jones, Cwmfedw.
Store Ewes: The first entry of breeding ewes this season, an entry of 189 strong, mainly
Sale of Store lambs to commence 10:30 followed by breeding ewes at 11:00 am.
DAIRY
A very good entry again met with keen demand with many more potential purchasers around the sale ring.
The top price of the day was £2020 paid for a commercial Friesian dairy heifer presented by Mr Ian Cadwalader of Glanhafren and sold locally to Mr Ian Roberts of Crow Wood, Churchstoke.
Mr Cadwalader also sold two other heifers including a
Pedigree Heifers sold to £1880 from Mr RN Thompson of Oak Green Farm East, Ashbourne selling locally to Mr R Bowdler. While Mr Ian Roberts purchased a Pedigree heifer presented by Messers AS & EM Goolden of Cil Bach, Meifod for £1810.
