Fruity offer from county council

16/09/2013 @ 09:35

Local communities are being urged to do their bit to improve local open spaces and help pollinating insects by taking part in a unique scheme.

Powys County Council and Natural Resources Wales have teamed up to give away native fruit trees, such as apple, pear, cherry and plum trees, as part of the Community Nectar Tree scheme.

The scheme aims to raise awareness of the importance of pollinating insects and the current decline of many native species, including bees.

Town and community councils, schools and other community groups in Powys are eligible to apply for up to 15 trees per site to plant within their local area.

Dr Emma Guy, the council’s Biodiversity Officer, said: “Fruit trees have been chosen because they produce blossom in early spring and are an important nectar source at a time when bees and other pollinating insects are becoming active winter.  These trees can also provide a fruit crop for the community, which is why our bees are so important to us.”

The scheme is being funded by Natural Resources Wales and administered by the council’s Countryside Service team.

If you’re interested in applying for free community fruit trees, contact Dr Emma Guy on biodiversity@powys.gov.uk

The closing date for applications is October 30 but applications will be considered on a ‘first come’ first served’ basis.
