Council wants police meeting over drinks ban

20/12/2014 @ 10:26

Welshpool Town Council is seeking a meeting with Dyfed Powys Police chiefs after Powys County Council rejected a call for a town centre alcohol ban.

A Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) for Welshpool town centre was rejected by Powys County Council despite having 97 per cent support from local residents.

The restriction was applied for by Welshpool Town Council in May to restrict alcohol consumption in the town centre area to enable police to control alcohol abuse and drinking on the street. The application came as part of Welshpool Town Council’s ‘Community Plan’ implemented in May which saw 97 per cent of Welshpool residents support a drinking order – the highest in the plan.

But Powys County Council rejected the application, stating that it was not supported by the Police.

Councillors expressed their disbelief this week after being encouraged by an earlier meeting with the Police Commissioner.

Estelle Bleivas, Welshpool Town Councillor responsible for police issues, said she was “very angry” at the rejection after fighting for five years for the drinking ban.I would like to know if the person who made this decision has ever been to Welshpool and seen the mess left by people drinking. People feel intimidated by groups of four, five or six people drinking on the streets.

“With the majority of the local residents behind us I thought common sense would prevail which makes me very angry but the town council has done its best.”

The council will now write to Dyfed Powys Police asking for an urgent meeting to discuss the situation.
