Iconic Welshpool ‘wonder’ returns

06/12/2010 @ 03:15

Welshpool has welcomed back one of the town’s unofficial ‘wonders’, just a fortnight after it appeared to have been removed forever.
The much maligned ‘Spar bench’ which has been associated more with anti-social behavior of late as opposed to being a resting point for the elderly and infirm has returned to its infamous location at the entrance of Church Street Car Park (right).
The bench was shifted by developers who also removed seven ancient trees to allow for a sweeping corner into the car park from Church Street. But it appears to have returned for the long-haul with concrete foundations rooting it to the pavement.
Earlier this year, members of the infamous Welshpool Dictionary Facebook Group voted that the Spar Bench was one of their ‘SeveRn Wonders of Welshpool’.
Meanwhile, a major signage exercise is being undertaken in the town centre as part of the re-development. Finger-post signs, directional signage as well as two giant town maps are to be positioned in key locations across the main public areas.
