Radio Maldwyn: The end

13/12/2010 @ 04:30

Radio Maldwyn, the Magic 756, is to come off the airwaves after shareholders today (Monday) voted to send the station into liquidation.
The news comes two weeks after we first reported that the station had run into difficulties and a proposal submitted by Station Director Austin Powell to wind up the station was accepted by an estimated 25 shareholders who attended the meeting.
The Special Resolution states: “The Company cannot, by reason and its liabilities, continue its business and that it is advisable to wind up.”
It goes on to say that Gerald Irwin of Irwin & Company of Station House, Midland Drive, Sutton Coldfield, West Midlands are appointed Liquidators for the purpose of winding up the business.
Set up in 1994, Radio Maldwyn established itself as a community radio station and even allowed listeners opportunities to become shareholders with almost 150 taking up the offer to purchase £5 shares.
One of those was Conservative Assembly Candidate for Montgomeryshire, Russ George, who attended the meeting and added that there was some hope for the future with four parties expressing an initial interest in the station.
He said: “Radio Maldwyn offered a good service throughout the Mid Wales area and it’s sad that the station had to be wound up. People will miss the station’s news updates during the adverse weather as many tuned in to find out what was going on. I am pleased that there have been expressions of interest to take on the running of the station. What is important to me is that we continue to have a local radio station and I intend to make my own enquires and help to facilitate this.”
