Welshpool Livestock Sales report on a highly successful auction at Buttington Cross Welshpool on

Monday, December 13 2010.

An entry of 90 OTM’s sold to an overall average of 95ppkg for the cows, 132ppkg for the heifers 114ppkg for the steers and 96ppkg for the bulls. D R Owen & Sons Sandilands topped the market with a Limousin cow weighing 707kg and achieving £1109.99. Other continental cows achieved £1059.84 for a charolais cow weighing 828kg from F W Humphreys Brook House, £1034.94 for a Limousin from CL & FE Jerman Glangwden. D R Owen & Sons also sold a Limousin heifer to £1001.88. D R Owen & Sons receive the Brairwood Products Ltd prize of £25 for the highest price cow over 48 months sold on the day.

20 fat cattle sold well to average 149ppkg for the steers and 158ppkg for the heifers. GW & BA Haynes Trefnant Isaf sold five heifers from 170ppkg to 182ppkg. RB & JA Jones Wernddu sold two steers to a top of 161ppkg. GW & BA Haynes receive the Briarwood Products price of £25 for the Highest ppkg animal sold on the day.

An entry of 9485prime lambs, selling to a very good average of 173.87ppkg.

Lights (1986) to 187ppkg from DE & KB Owen & Son Rhallt. Others to 184ppkg from C J Davies & Son Waengwyn. Average of 170ppkg.

Standards (2552) to 202ppkg from NG &GG Davies Trawsgelli. Others to 194ppkg from DE & KB Owen & Son Rhallt. Average of 175ppkg.

Mediums (3548) to 205ppkg from CL & C Watkins Bank Farm. Others to 195ppkg from D R Owen Sandilands. Average of 174ppkg.

Heavies (693) to 174ppkg from CL & C Watkins Bank Farm. Others to 171ppkg from D R Owen & Sons Sandilands. Average of 162ppkg.

Over Weights (108) to 151ppkg from I & J Evans Llwyn Hywel and M R M Matthews Tanyfron. Others to 147ppkg from D S W Jones & Co Ysguboriau. Average of 144ppkg.

A slight increase in the entry of cull sheep, saw ewes averaging well at £50.61 per head and rams at £49.59 per head. Ewes topped the market at £94 per head from A E Casewell Bodynfoel. D R Owen & Sons Sandilands presented ewes to £93 per head. E H Bennet Trellwydion presented cull rams to £84 per head.

A good entry of 754 store lambs selling to an average of £52.90. A large entry of smaller hill lambs dragged the average down, as quality large lambs were receiving a better trade with most of them reading above £60 per head. Texel theave lambs reached £66 from T M Davies Wynnstay Farm Llanbrynmair. Suffolk tup lambs topped the sale at £68 from M H Pugh Gilfach Kerry. Texel mixed and clean lambs reached £67.50 from BJ & MA Morgan Old Neuadd Mochdre. Speckled mixed and tup lambs sold to £34 from R A Hughes Bronderwgoed Llanbrynmair with Suffolk theave and tup lambs sold up to £54.50 from J E Jones Tanyffridd Penstrowed. Demand remains at a high as shown by a large crowd of potential purchasers. The sale of Store lambs will commence next week at 10.30am.

A catalogue entry of 26 cows and calves to include a special entry of 18 cows and calves from J E Lewis Moeldrehearn and E J Lewis Rhoslas. E J Lewis sold to a top price of £2110 for a Limousin cow with twin Belgian Blue Bull calves at foot to J M Rowlands Dolwen. Mr Lewis sold other cows and calves to £1420, £1140 and £1080 (x2). J E Lewis sold to a top price of £1080 for a Limousin cow with a Limousin bull calf at foot. R E Lewis Gribin sold a Aberdeen Angus 2008 born cow with a Limousin Heifer calf at foot to £1120 and an Aberdeen Angus 2008 born cow with a Limousin Bull calf at foot to £1030.

A catalogue sale of 130 store cattle took place at Welshpool Livestock Sales on Monday 14^th December and saw heifers averaging 157ppkg, steers 154ppkg.
