Freedom Leisure promises Flash overhaul

More details have been released about Freedom Leisure’s plans for The Flash, along with other leisure centres it will now be managing in Powys.

The not-for-profit trust, which has been delivering leisure facilities and services for 14 years, has signed a 15-year deal with Powys County Council to take over the county’s 15 leisure centre sites.

Part of its successful bid is a commitment to invest in a number of improvement projects and it will spend £2.5m on energy saving to minimise the impact on the environment of the Welshpool, Brecon, Ystradgynlais, Newtown and Machynlleth sites in particular.

The work will include pool covers, new air handling and low energy lighting.

In addition, Welshpool, Brecon and Rhayader will have upgraded fitness rooms, new indoor cycling and exercise class studios and refreshed reception areas and changing rooms.

The comprehensive Starfish Swimming Lesson Scheme programme already in place in Powys will continue under Freedom Leisure which will be extending the timetable to offer more lesson options and cater for the high demand.

“We are delighted to be in Powys and pleased to be working closely with our new colleagues and Council partners here,” says Ivan Horsfall Turner, Freedom Leisure Managing Director. “We fully respect the layout of the county and the individual character and profile of each site and are looking forward to helping all our customers fulfil their leisure, fitness and health goals.”

Staff at the Powys sites have remained in place and are joined by new colleagues to ensure smooth running of the sites. A new software system will enable efficient communications, online booking of classes and easier two-way communication between Freedom Leisure and its customers. Face-to-face feedback opportunities will also be set up including forums and ‘meet the manager’ events.

Freedom Leisure said prices will not change with customers still able to pay-as-they-go.
