Welshpool’s Memorial Garden has had a make-over, and it will be officially revealed to the public at a special event to mark the 80th Anniversary of the D-Day landings on June 6.

Councillors at last night’s Welshpool Town Council’s Services and Property meeting were told that the Memorial Garden in Howell Drive had been spruced up with a £5,000 grant, making it a more welcoming place for reflection and remembrance.

Operations Manager Paul McGrath reported that the work was now completed, and that the D-Day commemorations would provide an ideal opportunity to showcase the facility to the town.

“It’s an opportunity to show what we have done there and to remember that moment as a town,” said Mr McGrath, adding that he hoped the event would include local school children.

The Normandy Landings of June 6, 1944, are known as D-Day when hundreds of thousands of allied troops landed on the beaches of France and were dropped behind enemy lines to start the liberation of France. It is the largest seaborne invasion in history.
