‘Like driving across the Somme’

Welshpool’s most notoriously bad road has been compared to an infamous World War One battlefield by the Mayor.

During a discussion at the recent Welshpool Town Council Services and Property Committee meeting about fencing work at Maesydre, the can of worms was opened by Cllr Phil Pritchard when he asked: “Has anyone been down the road by the canal to the new football pitches lately? It’s absolutely horrendous.”

To which Town Mayor, Cllr Nick Howells, replied that “it’s like driving across the Somme”, referring to the bomb-cratered French battlefield.

The road has long been a thorn in the town’s side with disputes over ownership and responsibility stopping long-term repairs to the road which also leads to the rugby pitch.

But councillors were reassured last night that there is some light at the end of what has been a very long tunnel.

“We are working on that at the moment with the relevant parties to see if we can move things forward,” said Cllr Howells. “It is totally unacceptable as it is. Hopefully it is moving forward.”

Councillors will be kept up to date with any progress at future meetings.
