No immediate plans to sort accident black spot

The Welsh Government has confirmed that there are no plans to rectify one of our most notorious accident black spots, despite another nasty smash last weekend.

For years, the A458 between Trewern and Middletown, particularly near Bank Farm Caravan Park, has been the location of frequent accidents.

The concerned community council contacted Montgomeryshire Senedd Member, Russell George, for help, but his plea for urgent action to Transport Minister Ken Skates has been met by a frustrating response.

“We target our funding for engineering measures where there is a history of collisions where there is a pattern which can be addressed,” Mr Skates explained in his letter. “Whilst we don’t have any plans for road safety improvements at this location, we will continue to review and await details of the most recent personal injury collision data from the police to inform that process.

“We have asked our Trunk Road Agent to bring forward measures to renew the existing road markings in advance of the data.”

Mr Skates pointed out that the GoSafe mobile speed cameras have been increasing their presence in the area and urged members of the public to forward photos or video that could also help with the decision process.

The response hasn’t gone down well, and Mr Geoirge said: “Yet another incident on the A458 by Middletown last weekend. Only last month, Craig Williams MP and I and met on site with trunk road officials and the local traffic police to discuss the safety improvements needed.

“(I) have received a reply from the Minister which is very disappointing, had hoped for a more positive response. In my view there is already sufficient evidence to support road safety measures here.”

The local county councillor, Amanda Jenner, said she will continue to pursue safety measures and will work closely with both the MP and MS.
