Herbert gets Pool on right track

03/01/2011 @ 07:04

Chris Herbert got his chase for survival for Technogroup Welshpool off to a flying start with his first home game and a win today in the Huws Gray Alliance.

Pool netted twice to see off fellow relegation candidates Rhayader and Herbert was clearly the happier manager with his opposite number Dylan McPhee sent off in the second half for his second booking.

Herbert believes Pool can escape despite being docked 18 points and has signed 14 new players and will have been boosted by this victory.

Chris Melia made and scored a fine opener on 71 minutes and Pool wrapped it up through lively substitute Danny Davies in the 87th minute.

Guilsfield were unlucky not to cause a big upset at leaders Connah's Quay after going down 2-1. Ross Frame set up Rob Cookson for a well deserved opener in the 19th minute but they fell behind to a Gary O'Toole double in the 41st and 50th minutes. Guilsfield finished the stronger and battered the Nomads goal for the final 15 minutes and should have levelled when Frame and Graham Dyke failed to scramble the ball over the line from point blank range in the dying moments.

In the Spar Division One, Waterloo Rovers slipped to a 5-3 defeat at home to Carno in a clash rearranged from last week and in the second division, Llanfair United returned from Four Crosses with the points following a 2-1 victory. Meifod slumped to a 4-0 defeat at home to Rhosgoch.
