Town focus returns to survival

 

 

In what has been another spectacular week off the pitch for Technogroup Welshpool, manager Chris Herbert has quietly gone about his business by picking up another crucial signing in the club’s bid for survival.

 

As the Lilywhites prepare to take on Flint Town United in another big Huws Gray Alliance game, the resignation of chairman Michael Dawkins and the Central Wales Cup saga has placed the club on the front pages once again.

 

But it has not distracted Herbert who says the signing of full back Matty Jones from Leigh Genisis (formerly Leigh RMI) – his 17^th since taking charge – is the final signature required for a squad capable of league survival.

 

“He is very quick and strong on the ball,” said Herbert. “He can run and overlap all day, and is very attacking which is exactly what I wanted. This is more than likely to be my final signing, unless someone special comes up that could get straight in to the starting 11. I now have a squad of 20 players who are all as good as each other, so the pressure is on to perform.”

 

While Welshpool continue league action, Guilsfield host a League Cup match against Rhos Aelwyd looking to build on last week’s 11-goal Central Wales Cup spree against Cardigan.

 

“The lads’ attitude and commitment have been first class,” said manager Russell Cadwallader who has a full strength squad. “They have all been spot on at training and have looked sharp and very enthusiastic despite the winter break. We need to pull a string of results together now and look to win every game whether it is in the league or the cup.”

 

In the Spar Division One, Berriew face a shortage on the left side as they bit to extend their lead at the top.

 

Llanrhaeadr are in Central Wales Cup action so a win over Carno would see them extend their lead at the top to five points with three more games played than their closest rivals.

 

“Christian Webster pulled his hamstring so could be out for a few weeks and Shane Davies is unavailable for a few weeks also so we’re a bit short in that department,” said manager Neil Pryce who could well fill in the slot himself.”

 

Waterloo Rovers and Meifod will also try again in the Central Wales Cup, as will Four Crosses v Dyffryn Banw and Bow Street v Llansantffraid Village.

 

In the Spar Division Two, Montgomery face old foes Llanfair United with manager Clive McNamee expected to give a debut to returning midfielder Shane Kirkham. Stu Buckley-Robins is suspended so Geraint Windsor could make his first start since returning from injury.

 

Montgomeryshire Amateur League sides are involved in a mixture of league, league cup and Emrys Morgan Cup ties with many set to return after an enforced break of two months.
