Golden weekend for Adele

02/02/2011 @ 08:43

It was an incredible weekend for one of Britain’s most promising athletes who calls Welshpool home.

Adele Nicoll has risen to the top of the UK rankings for her age for shot put and underlined her growing reputation with a golden weekend that saw her smash two national records.

And as if her competition wasn’t keeping her busy enough, the 14 year-old was named Under 18's Sports Personality of the Year at the Montgomeryshire Sports Awards on Friday night in Newtown.

Immediately after, she travelled to Cardiff, arriving at midnight, to prepare for the Welsh Athletics Under 15 Indoor Championships in UWIC. Incredibly, she won gold and cemented her No 1 ranking with a new Welsh Indoor and Championship record throw of 13.56m.  Adele is currently seventh on the UK All Time Ranking’s list for her age group.

She even competed in the 60m hurdles and gained a bronze medal.

The following day, Adele competed in the shot put 4kg weight (the heaviest the shot gets for women - Adele is still in the Under 15 category and therefore still competes with the 3.25kg until next year) as she captained the Under 16 Welsh Schools International Team.

She threw a massive personal best shot of 12.52m to take gold for Wales and smashed the championship record by nearly 2m in the process! She was awarded the 'Athlete of the Meeting' award for the Under 16 Welsh Schools.

It has been an incredible rise to prominence for Adele who trains with multi-events coach Trevor Marsay three days a week at the Birchfield Harriers in Birmingham, and once a week in Deeside with throws training coach John Parkin.
