‘I was never offered Welshpool job’

One of the area’s top young managers has scotched summer rumours that he was offered the Technogroup Welshpool job.

Former Town favourite Chris Roberts (pictured) has made an impact as player-manager for Dyffryn Banw, taking them from an amateur league side into an established Spar Mid Wales Division One side.Chris Roberts

And the 35 year-old was said to be amongst the favourites to take over the job vacated by Huw Griffiths who resigned at the end of last season.

“Nobody approached me directly about the job,” he said. “Robbo (brother, Mark Roberts) was apparently sounded out on a night out in Welshpool about me becoming manager and him being my number two but no-one contacted me so it was only rumours.”

The job was handed to former Guilsfield manager Graham Evans and Roberts also claims it was merely gossip too that linked him to a role on the Guilsfield management team with Mike Barton and Bernie Jones. He said he remains focused on cementing Dyffryn Banw’s position in the new-look Spar Mid Wales Division One.

“It will be a very tough league this season,” he said. “Berriew start as favourites in my book but there will be a lot of tough games. I believe that with two or three more players we could be challenging as well but we only need two or three injuries to be looking over our shoulders too!”
