Welshpool Rugby Club's Junior Academy Director Barry Williams reports on Under 13 tour to Whitland

After months of fundraising and preparation, Welshpool's Under 13s ventured to Whitland to take part in the South Wales Rugby Challenge over the Easter holidays, and finished as Runners-Up in the Plate competition - a very creditable finish considering the standard of opposition they faced.

On the first day of matches, they took the competition by surprise, claiming two victories and a draw in their five matches.

After showing plenty of fire in a loss to a very physical Cwmgors side, they bounced back to defeat St Mary's College of Dublin, before drawing with the hosts in a very entertaining match.

A defeat at the hands of a very talented Trebanos side followed, before they finished the day with a victory over Monmouth.

Finding themselves in the Plate final, they again faced Whitland, and despite battling hard, a mounting injury list left them unable to see off their opponents and they had to settle for the runners-up position.

As coaches, we were very pleased with how the boys played throughout the weekend - they gave their all throughout, gained a lot of respect from the sides they played, and exceeded all expectations we had for them. The boys conducted themselves well on and off the pitch, and were a credit to the club and to the town.

The touring experience is something that can have a hugely positive effect upon young players, and we would like to thank all the companies and organisations that aided us in our fundraising, including The Oval Zone Rugby Magazine, Welshpool Town Council, Welshpool Freemasons, Tesco, Morrisons, SWG Business, RGC 1404, The Gogs and Russell George AM.
