Local shooters returned to Montgomeryshire and District Airgun League action with a bang with no less than five teams breaking the 200-point barrier.

Following a run of Cup matches and the annual gala presentation evening, members showed superb form with a record 12 shooters scoring over 35 points and one match decided by just half a point.

Newtown hosted host to Llanfair Caereinion, with Jess Corbett’s newly-formed team edging out the visitors by 196.2-192.9. The town’s Bowling Club is proving to be a popular venue with visiting teams receiving a warm welcome.

League stalwarts Arddleen found themselves a six-shooter squad in a pitched battle for the honours when Crew Green A came calling. The home side clawed back an early deficit to finally prevail, with the league’s Cagney and Lacey (Martin Pearce and Richard Lewis) holding steady to finish the match 202.9-202.4 – they don’t come much closer than that.

The Admiral Rodney saw local upstarts Crew Green B shooting against a Guilsfield B team still looking to record their first victory this season. The visitors succumb to the steady shooting of the Rodney’s squad led by Adam Hilditch’s confident start of 35.3 as the hosts won 201.4-189.1.

Third-placed Guilsfield A continued their winning streak when Castle Caereinion paid them a visit. Their middle and lower-order putting intense pressure on the fourth-placed team. Castle’s Richard Morgan scored his customary possible, a 35.5, as did their second shooter Rob Williams (35.4). Unfortunately for Castle, the Guilsfield A brought their well-known pressure to bear and emerged triumphant, with possibles from Paul Phillips and Roger Knight.

The Cock Inn at Forden saw visiting Churchstoke continue their run of wins.

The slew of possibles scored were: D. Morgan (CGA) 35.1; Sue Brown (CGB) 35.2; Adam Hilditch (CGB), Edward Kelton (CGA), Jess Corbett (Newtown), Owen Stimpson (Churchstoke), Paul Gwilliam (Churchstoke) and Roger Knight (Guilsfield A) 35.3; Martin Pearce (Ardleen), Paul Phillips (Guilsfield A) and Rob Williams (Castle Caereinion) 35.4 and Castle Caereinion’s  Richard Morgan a superb 35.5

Shooter of the week – Martin Pearce, whose 35.4 secured Arddleen the narrowest of victories.

Match of the week -  The tight and closely-fought showdown between Arddleen and Grew Green A.
