‘I’m no quitter’ says Town boss

Technogroup Welshpool manager Graham Evans has come out fighting; insisting that his side will honour this weekend’s season opener with Gap Connah’s Quay amidst rumours of player shortages within the club.Graham Evans
Evans has endured a baptism of fire with the relegated Welsh Premier League side, and has had to completely rebuild after losing every single player from last season’s first team squad.
And despite admitting to talking to nearly 60 players this summer, he will begin life in the Huws Gray Alliance this Saturday with a ‘very small squad’.
“To be totally honest it has been hellish hard,” said the former Guilsfield boss. “I came in quite late to the job and at a time when most players had already made their minds up where they wanted to play. I have been playing catch-up ever since and feel we are five weeks behind schedule.
“I am still working night and day to try and sign players. The local players just don’t seem interested in wanting to play for Welshpool so I have been forced to look at players from the Wrexham area and across the border.
“When I took the job on a lot of people told me that I must be mad and to be honest I have found out what they meant! But I have got to get on with it. There is no point feeling sorry for ourselves and I remain positive that we will sort this out and consolidate this season.”
Evans believes that players will come soon after the season starts if they don’t fit into the clubs they have signed at, but in the mean time he is down to the bare bones.
“This is a new club really with a new committee,” he said. “I am in this for the long term and I am determined that it will be sorted. I have asked the question of myself ‘why can’t I attract the players?’ and sometimes it has been depressing but then something happens that makes it all worthwhile.
“I have the full support of the chairman and the committee and I believe the important thing is to remain positive and keep working at it.”
Evans will be assisted by coach Benji Evans for the season.
