‘Come and have a go if you think…’

A MyWelshpool reader has come up trumps and come to the rescue of a local sports scene that was desperate for a new facility.

Last month, we ran a story after being contacted by Jim Sharman, the man behind local banger racing events that were in danger of being lost forever due to a lack of land.

Jim had come forward to offer a solution to the boy racers who were, at the time, accused of using the town’s one-way system as a race track.

He believes that by offering youngsters the chance to banger race, it would take away their need for speed on our roads.

However, there was one sticking point… the lack of available space.

But a chain reaction to our article has resulted in a hand shake and a pledge… and the potential for monthly events which we can all enjoy.

“It is fantastic news,” said Jim. “A friend of mine, Chris Williams, read the article and put me in touch with Nigel Bowen from Nantfforch, Cyfronydd, and he has agreed to let us use his land for events. We have found Nigel to be very accommodating and helpful and after a successful meeting with Nigel, we have agreed to his request that we donate some money from proceedings to Wales Air Ambulance, as this charity is very pertinent to Nigel. 

“So as a team here at MWBC, I would like to personally say a huge thanks to Nigel Bowen for allowing us the use of his land to start this project up again after a few years of no activity. It will help many local people, including kids, carry on their favourite hobby.

Jim said that they are already planning for a November 3 bonfire spectacular with the potential for one event per month after that.

He also repeated his initial message to the town’s boy racers with a friendly challenge.

“Get in touch with me and let’s see how you can drive round a track,” he said.
