Welshpool sign Newtown striker

Frustrated at being unable to break into the first-team squad in recent weeks, striker Jamie Breese has left Welsh Premier League Newtown to join Huws Gray Alliance outfit Technogroup Welshpool.

A Llanidloes-born player who is the product of the Robins' former partnership with Coleg Powys, the 19-year-old progressed through the reserves to the first-team squad at Latham Park and has scored twice from 18 (+22) Welsh Premier appearances to date.

Despite making 11 starts and nine substitute appearances this season, his opportunities have been limited since the January transfer window, when manager Andy Cale signed AFC Liverpool frontman Steve Jones, who has netted four times from his six appearances since arriving at the club.

Welshpool manager Chris Herbert said he was delighted to have captured Breese's signature, who he described as one of the best strikers in Mid Wales.

“I am made up with signing Jamie. In my opinion he is the best young striker in Mid Wales and has a massive future in football,” said Herbert. “I’m confident that now with players like Jamie, Calvin Davies, Mike Cronshaw and Chris Melia I can put out one of the best strike forces in the league.

“Jamie is the final signing as the transfer window closes on Thursday, but I’m more than happy with the squad I have now assembled, and hopefully we will give it all we can to beat the drop, the lads have confidence that we will beat the drop and I certainly do, there are 21 points to play for and it’s doable.”

Meanwhile, Herbert said full back Mike Sawtell has resisted the temptation to switch back to Guilsfield this week.

He said: “Mike has turned down the chance to rejoin Guilsfield to stay and fight to keep Welshpool up. He is a vital player and will be back in the squad this Friday at home to Penryncoch, after missing the last month due to work commitments.”
