Dyke departure hits Guilsfield

01/04/2011 @ 02:16

‘Squeaky bum time’ is the phrase of the moment and Guilsfield appears to be the team who will be on edge more than most as the season’s end draws rapidly nearer.

Striker Graham Dyke (below) has decided to end the season at Ellesmere, reducing Cadwallader’s first team squad to 13 for a run-in that will see them fight for survival as well as bid for three trophies.

“Survival is our priority,” said manager Russell Cadwallader, who failed in his bid to sign Llanidloes playmaker Gareth Mansell this week. “We are capable of winning all of our remaining games but some of them are six pointers against teams around us so they will be like cup finals where anything can happen. Points really do matter now so it is squeaky bum time!”

The Guils travel north to Llangefni Town safe in the knowledge that they have enjoyed more success on the road this season but games are running out as teams close to them like Ruthin and Rhayader finally find some form.

Meanwhile, don’t tell Technogroup Welshpool manager Chris Herbert that it’s all over.

Complicated promotion and relegation issues mean there is still a slight chance that the Lilywhites could stay up and, despite his squad being stripped down to the minimum too, he believes they should carry on the fight.

“Everything that could go wrong went wrong last week with Ruthin and Rhayader both winning and us getting beat. It was a real kick in the teeth,” said the charismatic boss. “Some of the lads are playing without desire and look like they are there to see the season out. I will be letting them know my thoughts on Saturday.  I will also be letting them know that it’s not over yet. Our main aim is for us to get off the foot of the table, and if we do that we at least give ourselves a chance of survival, because some of the sides due to come up are struggling to meet the ground criteria.”

This weekend they host Buckley without Chris Melia (right), Dan Barnett, John Dowridge, Paul Dowridge and Calvin Davies who will all miss the rest of the season. Jamie Breese is also unavailable due to his 30-day waiting period after leaving Newtown.

There’ll be few better candidates for manager-of-the-year than Clive McNamee at Montgomery.

The experienced boss has formed an impressive unit which has set the newly formed Spar Division Two alight this year, picking up a few Division One scalps along the way.

And it’s another break from league action this weekend with a double header, firstly against title rivals Tregaron in the Division Two Cup on Saturday and then old rivals Llanfair in the Montgomeryshire Cup on Sunday.

It will be a tough month as McNamee (left) only has a small squad and can’t delve into a reserve team but the boss remains in buoyant mood.

“It's getting to the business end of the season now and whilst we are in pole position at the moment, things can change quickly with every game,” he said: “All we can do is try and win every game. As it stands the league is in our own hands so if we can get one of the promotion places sorted then we can see what we can do about going up as champions.

“The cup games are no problem. To be honest they are a nice distraction from the league, even at this late stage. I've asked the lads to not think any further than the next game and I suppose I should do the same.”

Four Crosses have dipped into the transfer market again this week to sign former Shawbury United youngster Jack Harris. Harris, 20, has joined from West Midlands League side St. Martins and can play in midfield or up front. He will go straight into the squad that travels to Bont.

In other quarter final ties, Llanfair United travel to Abermule and Llanfyllin host Rhosgoch.

In Division One, Llanidloes and Llanrhaeadr can close the gap on Berriew who are without a match. Llanidloes travel to Tywyn Bryncrug and Llanrhaeadr go to Bow Street. Waterloo Rovers look to build on their welcome return to form at Aberystwyth University. Carno entertain Builth Wells, Llansantffraid Village go to Newbridge and Dyffryn Banw travel to Penparcau.

In Division Two, Meifod travel to Aberaeron and Kerry take on Llandrindod Wells.
