Local swimmers win in Germany

Five Welshpool swimmers have performed superbly at the weekend’s Internationaler Maximare Swim Cup in Hamm, Germany.

International swimmers Tom Piggott (18) and Morgan Jones (18) were joined by teammates Kate Pugh (16), Callum Piggott (14) and Marie Jones (14) as part of the Oswestry Otters Swimming Club.

The swimmers did their club and home towns proud as Morgan won gold in the 50m and 100m Backstroke and bronze in the 50m Butterfly. He was then joined by Tom and two other teammates (Tim Bridgewood and Callum Rawlings) from Oswestry to win gold in the 4x100m Medley Relay and bronze in the 4x100m Freestyle Relay.

Callum Piggott and won silver in the 13-14 year age group 400m Individual Medley and bronze in the 100m Butterfly.

Not to be outdone by the boys, Kate won silver in the 400m Freestyle and silver in the 200m Breaststroke.

Head Coach Tim Hastie said: “The Otters did us proud, swimming a total of 50 events with the swimmers achieving personal bests in almost all of them.”

The swimmers will now continue their training in preparation for the Summer Nationals in August and for Tom who will be competing at the British Para-swimming International in Glasgow at the end of April.
