Zak makes it a hat-trick of wins

Welshpool’s Zak Hughes has made it three wins from three starts to open up a commanding lead in the BTRDA Fiesta ST Trophy.

The young driver took advantage of local knowledge of the Hafren Forest and the Sweet Lamb stages, just outside Llanidloes, to continue his perfect start to the season with co-driver Tom Wood at the Rally Nuts weekend event.

“I felt so comfortable over the first two stages, the speed came naturally and I was very happy to take two stage wins in the morning loop,” said Zak.

This momentum continued, as the duo set another pair of fastest stage times in the middle loop of stages to head back to service with a 14-second lead over the second placed crew of Bobby Mitchell.

With a battle for second developing behind them as David Kelly pushed Mitchell, the times were fast so Hughes maintained his speed and eventually secured a 39-second winning margin from Mitchell in second with Kelly settling for third.

“I am so happy to have had another amazing result. We now have three wins from three rallies so far this season, which has boosted our championship campaign and we really do have one hand on the championship title I feel.

“The next round is my home rally, starting in Oswestry. I’m looking forward to carrying the momentum forward. It would be nice to get another win on the home rally, but we will be driving with the championship in mind, so it will be a case of seeing how it goes on the day.”

Zak is supported by Philip Paul Car Centre and Powys Transport.
