Monty edge Pool in derby

Tim (pictured) claimed the Davies family bragging rights on Saturday as not only did his Montgomery side beat arch rivals Welshpool, but he caught his brother Patrick out!

Welshpool were all out for 137 as Sam Williams took 4-26, Alex Bromley 3-30 and Eddie Bennett 2-34 to guide Monty to a four-wicket victory.

Russell Cadwallader top scored for Welshpool with 40, while Patrick Davies was caught by his brother Tim when on 18.

Speaking after the match, Tim said: “It’s always nice to take any catch, but when you catch your brother and hear his subsequent moan of displeasure, it just adds the icing on the cake!”

Montgomery knocked off the winning runs just six down as Aaron Ruff-Cock scored an unbeaten 36. He was supported by Charlie Clinton (28), Ieuan Griffiths (22) and Thomas Corfield (22).

Skipper Sam Williams said: “It’s always nice to win a derby match.

“It was a great team effort. We have won two on bounce now and we are now looking forward to our our T20 match against Wroxeter on Thursday night as we bid to retain our Junior Slam trophy.”

Newtown’s excellent start to the Division One season ended at home in a tight match against Shelton.

Strike bowler Dave Anthony (4-14) led from with front with two wickets apiece for Tom Anderson, Dave Laird and Bryant Galpin (2-17) restricting the visitors to just 118.

But wickets tumbled early with only Ryan Davies (26) and Tom Foulkes (23) making any headway as the innings ended 10 runs short in the final over.

Montgomery II put in a much improved Division Five performance on last week as they lost to a very strong Condover outfit.

The home side scored 211-2 off 45 overs despite a terrific spell of bowling from youngster Tom Hughes.

In reply Montgomery were all out for 102 in the 43rd over, as Keith Griffiths (23) and Charlie Kinsey (20) top scored.

Newtown II slumped to an eight-wicket defeat at Alberbury II after only posting 117-9 from their 40. Dave Wilkinson top scoring with 42.

Guilsfield & Llandrinio (pictured) picked up their first Division Six win with a comprehensive victory at Acton Reynald II. After electing to field, Rupert Shingler (2-11) and Sam Griffiths (4-14) did the main damage as the hosts were reduced to 52 all out. Griffiths (23) and Jordan Evans (20) didn’t hang around and saw the villagers home in the eighth over.

Llanidloes lead the way in Division Seven following their exciting two-wicket win over Ludlow III, who were dismissed for 133.

Ioan Swallow and Rob Davies took three wickets each to lay the foundations, but the batsmen made hard work of it with only the mid order of Dave Moody (33) and Gerrard Owen (20no) steadying the ship to secure the win.

Veteran Dale Evans smashed an unbeaten 66 as Welshpool II picked up the points at home to Condover II. Chris Proctor added 35 as Welshpool posted 159-8, a target they defended well for a 38-run win.
