Zak takes ‘home’ rally

Welshpool driver Zak Hughes blazed another trail of glory, this time in his own backyard to take the fourth round of the Fiesta ST Trophy at the weekend’s Plains Rally.

Based out of Oswestry, the fourth round of the BTRDA Rally Series tackled familiar forests around Bala and Lake Vyrnwy and the 19-year-old Zak Hughes from Welshpool extended his winning streak to remain unbeaten for the season and hold a commanding lead at the top of the standings.

Despite struggling in these forests in previous years, Hughes, and his co-driver Tom Wood, took two fastest stage times on the first two stages to open up a 22-second lead over championship rival Bobby Mitchell.

“It was a very challenging morning, the conditions were very slippery and the roads were narrow. We had a high speed spin about one mile into the rally.  We were super lucky, it spun 360 degrees at over 80mph and ended pointing the right way down the stage, so we lost minimal time.”

The afternoon stages saw a controlled drive from Hughes and Wood, as they maintained the gap to bring home the win, just 15 seconds ahead of second place Mitchell.

“We had been struggling all day with electrical issues on the car, so to be able to battle through the problems and take our fourth win was amazing.

“To have four victories from four rallies is just amazing. We are definitely having the best season of my career so far, I’m really looking forward to the second half of the year now.”

Next up is the Nicky Grist Stages in Builth Wells with a podium finish required to be crowned champion.
