Hughes takes championship
The pair took their class win at the weekend’s Woodpecker Stages Rally through the Radnor forests to open up an unassailable lead in the overall championship following four previous wins.
Hughes only needed a finish to confirm the title, and was tackling routes that he considers as his favourite on the calendar, so he finished in style.
Throughout the morning, the pair opened up a slim seven-second lead in the class despite taking it easy in the wet and changeable conditions. Over the remaining three stages, Hughes stacked up another three stage wins to finish the event first in the ST Trophy, and confirm the championship title.
“The event was hard work for us, trying to maintain concentration and a steady pace was quite nerve wrecking,” said Hughes. “This has been the best year if my career so far. We have ended our time in the ST Trophy with five wins from five finishes in the series. I can’t wait to wait to get plans sorted for the 2020 season!”
