Welshpool seeking first league points

03/10/2019 @ 10:30

A disappointing result last weekend for Welshpool as they lost by 3-43 at home against unbeaten Rhyl (pictured) and another stern test coming up as they face a difficult trip to Abergele this week, a team who are always hard to beat on their own patch, writes Gary Williams from Oval Zone Rugby.

Coach, Dai Roberts, will want to quickly put the Rhyl game behind his team and get some confidence-boosting league points.

Elsewhere, Llanidloes had a second 80+ points defeat of the season when they travelled to Mold who are hotly tipped as potential league winners after their relegation last season. Llani did manage to score two tries of their own, making a final score of 81-14 and will be looking for a vast improvement as they travel north to Colwyn Bay.

Newtown were the only local victors in Division Two North with a 28-17 home win against Bangor, picking up a much-valued bonus point in the process. Leading 21-0 at one point, it looked as though a high score was coming the host’s way, but as they did against Welshpool the previous week, Bangor battled hard to reduce the deficit, reducing Newtown to just one further score and will be glad that they already have two trips to Mid Wales ticked off.

A trip to Wrexham awaits Newtown this week and they know they'll have to be at their best to get a result against a team who are unbeaten and joint top of the division with Rhyl and Mold, all on 14 points.

In Division One North, COBRA made a valiant attempt to gain points at Bro Ffestiniog, taking an early lead but eventually going down 15-7, and allowing Bro to draw level with them at four points each in the league.

This week, COBRA welcome Nant Conwy to Meifod and, although Nant haven't made their usual winning run to sit near the top, they have shown as each week has passed that they are getting their act together and COBRA will have to be at their best to claim a famous victory.
