No Xmas cheer for local clubs

Welshpool, enjoying some good form recently, were brought back to earth with a bump against impressive unbeaten Division Two North title-chasers Wrexham, losing 48-7, writes Gary Williams from Oval Zone Rugby.

It was a dismal afternoon for Pool who found themselves 15-0 down in as many minutes and did well to keep the hosts down to a 27-0 interval lead.

In the second half, playing down the slight slope and with the freezing wind at their backs, they did enjoy some good possession for the first 20 minutes of the second period but failed to get over the line for that elusive score.

Wrexham regained the initiative and scored two quick tries and conversions to lead 41-0 before Pool got their reward for a period of sustained pressure close to the Wrexham line when Tom Davies broke through the defence to touch down under the posts with Tom Williams converting.

However, it was Wrexham who had the last word with another try and conversion to give a final scoreline of 48-7.

Newtown's game at Mold was postponed but Llanidloes put in a much better performance as they hosted Nant Conwy 2nds.

Trailing 7-10 at half time, the Llani boys were in with a real chance of causing an upset but it wasn't to be as the visitors scored 17 second half points for a final score of 7-27, gaining a four-try bonus point in the process.

In Division One North, COBRA put in one of their best performances of the season but still couldn't get any points on the league table, going down at home 5-13 against high-flying Ruthin.

Tonight (Wednesday), Welshpool's 2nd XV travel to Bala 2nds for a mid-week friendly.

There are no games this Saturday but all eyes will be on Newtown v Llanidloes on December 28 as both sides seek those valuable points to start their climb from the relegation zone.

Due to the odd number of teams in the league, Welshpool are the unlucky team without a game on that weekend.
