Double delight for Welshpool

14/01/2020 @ 09:34

It was a good day for Welshpool RFC as both their first and second teams recorded wins against Abergele at the Maesydre, writes Gary Williams from Oval Zone Rugby.

The second string, enjoying a revival with an influx of players this season, gained an impressive 51-0 victory in a friendly played in great spirit against a gallant Abergele side.

The first fifteen, had it much tougher as they locked horns with Abergele’s first team, eventually coming through with a hard-fought 17-10 win.

A first half try by Tom Worthy and a conversion and penalty by Tom Williams allowed the hosts to go in to the half time break with a 10-5 lead.

Ryan Goodwin scored a try mid-way through the second period, again converted by Tom Williams to increase the lead to 17-5.

This feisty affair, already having seen a number of yellows, turned nasty at this point resulting in a red card for a player from both teams. The visitors responded well and with 10 minutes to go crossed for their second try to make it 17-10.

Pool defended well in the closing stages and were relieved to hear the final whistle and claim the winning points.

Newtown had the daunting task of trying to stop the unbeaten Wrexham juggernaut at The Rec. The visitors, odds-on favourites to win this Division, showed no mercy and recorded an emphatic 5-48 win. Newtown will be glad of a week off next Saturday and will have to regroup before their next game which is the visit of another promotion favourite, Rhyl, on January 25.

Llanidloes, so close to upsetting high-flying Mold last week, came agonisingly close again, this week against Colwyn Bay, to securing the win to get them moving from the foot of the table.

However, the Bay, enjoying a good run of form at the moment, just held the upper hand and withstood constant home pressure to return north with a 10-12 win.
