A summer without cricket?

With it becoming increasingly unlikely that we will see any more winter sport played this season, cricket clubs are already readying themselves for a quiet summer.

Football, Rugby, Hockey and Netball are among the sports locally to have been axed, as national governing bodies play it safe to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

And now cricket clubs are said to be anticipating the likely announcement of at least a delay to their season, which was due to start in five weeks.

Guilsfield Cricket Club will be holding a meeting Monday to discuss the potential impact, including financially.

“It is of course something we need to seriously consider now,” said a spokesperson. “We need to be prepared because as a club we still face costs of pitch maintenance, insurance etc even if we don’t start on time.

“If the league is delayed, or even cancelled for the summer, then it will have a big impact on the local game, but of course we’ll need to adhere to whatever the health experts are recommending.”

Newtown, Welshpool, Montgomery and Llanidloes are also part of the Shropshire Cricket League.
