Welsh glory for school U12’s

Welshpool High School’s Year Seven side is the toast of the town tonight (Sunday) after securing the Welsh Schools Football Association title.

The youngsters, aged under 12, clinched the title in dramatic fashion in the last minute when the match against Pontllanfraith was poised to be settled by penalty kicks at the Venue, Oswestry.

It was a great achievement for the school which last tasted Welsh glory through the U16 side back in 1996.

And it started well for Welshpool. Sam Evans, the son of former Welshpool Town star Ian, slotted them ahead in the first five minutes. But Pont pulled level before Callum Preece regained the lead shortly before half time.

The second half was tense and it was Pont that drew level to send the game into a nerve wracking final quarter.

And just as penalties looked likely, striker Ieuan Morgan-Thomas popped up to clinch the deserved victory in front of the bumper crowd.
